A wedding dress should be cleaned within two to three weeks of the wedding, not months later. The reason: champagne, white wine, perspiration and sweet drink stains are invisible at first but oxidise brown over the following months and become permanent. After cleaning, store the dress in an acid-free box or a cotton bag — never in plastic and never on a hanger long term.
Why the first weeks matter
The most common mistake is delay: the dress stays in its cover until "when I have time", and time becomes a year.
The problem is not the stains you can see, but the ones you cannot. Sugar from champagne, white wine, juice or cake is colourless when dry. Exposed to air over the following months it slowly caramelises and appears as a brown mark — on the bodice, the hem, the sleeves. At that stage removal is far harder and sometimes impossible without bleaching the area.
Similarly, perspiration at the underarms and bodice contains salts and proteins that attack the fibre over time and leave permanent yellowing.

Why not at home
A wedding dress usually combines several materials — silk or satin, tulle, lace, beads, sequins, sometimes structured lining. Each needs different treatment, and uniform washing damages the delicate ones.
Hand-sewn appliqués come loose under mechanical agitation, and tulle permanently loses its shape if wrung. These are irreparable.
How to store it properly
- Cleaned first. A dress stored dirty degrades regardless of how well it is packed.
- Acid-free box or cotton bag. Ordinary paper and cardboard contain acids that yellow the fabric over time.
- Never in plastic. It traps air, and residual moisture causes odour and mould spots.
- Folded with acid-free tissue between the layers, so permanent creases do not form along the folds.
- Not on a hanger long term. The weight pulls at the shoulders and distorts them over years.
- Dry, dark, stable temperature. Attics and cellars are the worst options — wide swings in temperature and humidity.
If a year has already passed
Not necessarily lost. Oxidised stains can be treated, but the outcome depends on the material, the type of stain and how advanced the oxidation is.
