How often to wash bed linen, duvets and towels
Bed linen should be washed every 1–2 weeks, towels after 3–4 uses, and duvets and pillows twice a year. Halve those intervals if you sleep without nightwear, sweat at night, share the bed with pets, or suffer from allergies. The reason is not smell but the build-up of dead skin cells, sebum and dust mites.

Why it matters, beyond smell
Over one night an adult loses roughly half a litre of perspiration and a considerable number of skin cells. All of it stays in the fabric.
Dust mites feed on dead skin cells, and their waste is one of the most common household allergens. It is invisible and odourless — which is why "the sheets look clean" is a poor criterion.
With towels the issue is different: they stay damp for hours in a poorly ventilated bathroom. Damp plus warmth plus skin cells means bacterial growth. A towel that smells musty after drying is already past its interval.
Temperatures
- White cotton linen: 60°C. Dust mites are destroyed at this temperature.
- Coloured linen: 40°C to preserve colour; mites survive at 40°C but are mechanically removed by washing.
- Towels: 60°C, no softener. Softener coats the fibres and reduces absorbency — the reason old towels stop soaking up water.
- Silk and satin: 30°C, delicate cycle.
Common mistakes
Overloading the machine. Linen needs room to tumble. A full machine does not rinse completely, and detergent left in the fibres irritates skin.
Softener on towels. It feels soft but makes them water-repellent. For soft towels, use white vinegar in the rinse instead.
Folding before fully dry. The most common cause of musty smell in the wardrobe.
Washing a duvet in too small a machine. The filling clumps and never redistributes. A double duvet needs at least 8 kg capacity.
Duvets and pillows — the special case
This is where most people postpone, because it is inconvenient: they do not fit in a home machine, and drying needs space and time. As a result many duvets are never washed at all.
