How much carpet cleaning costs in Bucharest, and why prices differ
Professional carpet cleaning in Bucharest costs between 18 and 30 RON per square metre, depending on the material and the condition of the carpet. For a typical 2×3 m living-room carpet, that means roughly 130–180 RON. The price is calculated per square metre, not per item — which is why two carpets that look alike can cost different amounts.
How it is calculated
Measure the length and width in metres and multiply them. That is all. At Quick Wash the rate is 22 RON/sqm, with free pickup and delivery in Bucharest and Ilfov.
| Carpet size | Area | Cost at 22 RON/sqm |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6 × 2.3 m — bedroom | 3.7 sqm | ~81 RON |
| 2 × 3 m — living room (most common) | 6 sqm | ~132 RON |
| 2.5 × 3.5 m — large living room | 8.75 sqm | ~192 RON |
| 3 × 4 m — large carpet | 12 sqm | ~264 RON |
| 0.8 × 3 m — hallway runner | 2.4 sqm | ~53 RON |
Mind the minimum order. Companies offering home pickup have a threshold — ours is 100 RON in Bucharest and 150 RON in Ilfov. A small runner on its own will not reach it; it is usually worth combining with a duvet or curtains.
What drives the price
The material
- Synthetics (polypropylene, polyester, acrylic) — most apartment carpets. They wash well, dry fast and are the cheapest to clean.
- Wool — needs lower temperatures and pH-neutral detergents. Washed aggressively, wool felts irreversibly and shrinks. The process is slower and more careful, so it costs more.
- Silk, viscose, bamboo — delicate. Viscose changes texture on contact with water and can be left permanently marked if treated wrongly. Many companies refuse these or treat them dry only.
- Handmade, Persian, oriental — handled separately, often by hand, with colour-fastness tested first. Priced after assessment, not by standard rate.
The condition
A regularly vacuumed carpet without stains is cleaned in a normal cycle. One that has not been washed for three years, with dust compacted into the base, needs pre-treatment and several passes.
What almost always adds cost:
- pet stains — urine needs enzymatic treatment, otherwise the smell returns after drying
- mould or prolonged damp
- old grease, wine or ink stains
- fringed carpets, cleaned and combed separately
When it is worth it
Worth it if the carpet is wool, handmade, or cost you more than a few hundred lei. Professional cleaning every two years extends its life considerably: fine dust in the base cuts the fibres from inside, like an abrasive, even when the surface looks clean.
Not really worth it for a thin synthetic carpet bought for 150 RON that is already worn or faded. Cleaning approaches the cost of replacing it.
At home or professionally
It can be done at home with a rented injection-extraction machine, but three things are worth knowing first.
Drying is the real problem. A thick carpet soaked with water needs 24–48 hours of drying with good ventilation. In an apartment, in winter, incomplete drying means a damp smell that never leaves — and sometimes mould in the base layer.
Detergent stays in the fibres if it is not rinsed enough. The residue attracts dust and the carpet gets dirty faster than before.
Wool and viscose are unforgiving. These are the materials where a mistake is permanent.
How long it takes
With us, 3–5 working days, including complete drying. We pick it up from your door and bring it back clean and fully dry.
Between cleanings
- Vacuum weekly, in both directions. The dust that reaches the base is what cuts the fibres.
- Treat stains immediately, by blotting, never rubbing. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper.
- Rotate the carpet every few months so wear and sun exposure stay even.
- Do not use all-purpose solutions on wool or silk without testing in a hidden corner first.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to clean a 2×3 m carpet?
About 132 RON at the rate of 22 RON/sqm. Pickup and delivery are free in Bucharest and Ilfov, with a minimum order of 100 RON in Bucharest.
How long does carpet cleaning take?
3–5 working days, including complete drying. Drying cannot be rushed without risking damage to the fibres.
Are wool carpets cleaned like synthetic ones?
No. Wool needs lower temperatures and pH-neutral detergents. Washed aggressively it felts and shrinks irreversibly.
Can pet stains be removed?
Usually yes, but it requires specific enzymatic treatment, not just washing. Urine penetrates the base layer, and if untreated the smell returns after drying.
Can I clean the carpet myself?
For synthetic carpets, in warm weather with good ventilation — yes. For wool, silk, viscose or handmade carpets it is not advisable, because mistakes are irreversible.
How often should a carpet be cleaned?
Every 1–2 years for a living-room carpet in daily use. More often with small children, pets or allergy sufferers.
